Reading Plus Visagraph Eye Movement Recording Example

This is an eye movement recording of a struggling 7th grade student as they are reading silently and interacting with text. Follow along with the little red dot. This red dot is where this student’s eyes actually met the text as they were reading silently. This is what we would describe as an inefficient way to take in the text (to say the least).

What do you think this student's comprehension would be like? This student is putting a tremendous amount of cognitive energy into simply getting through the text. They have very little mental energy left over for the ultimate goal of comprehension. How do you think this student is going to feel about reading?

Reading Plus "Let's READ" Partnership with the Brooklyn Nets

The “Let’s READ” program is a collaborative effort between collegiate/professional sports teams, schools, and students to improve fluency and comprehension skills, and to help students view reading as a pathway to success.

Reading Plus launched the "Let's READ" program with the Brooklyn Nets professional basketball team at Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School in the Fall of 2014. The partnership has allowed the Nets to have a direct impact on reading improvement of students in their local school.

The Nets are sponsoring Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School's participation in Reading Plus, a web-based silent reading program for students in third grade and above. More importantly, the team has become a fan of each student. The Nets motivational support and incentives go a long way toward helping kids stay on track.

Jeff Scott, Brooklyn Nets Community Relations Manager said, "Reading is everything... and through Reading Plus, the Nets are helping to create strong readers as well as confident individuals."

Former WNBA player Helen Darling has a passion for literacy, and she is driving the "Let's READ" community partnership initiative. As Community and Partnership Manager for Reading Plus, Helen's mission is to partner with sports leagues to make sustainable improvements in literacy, one school at a time. “We can change the lives of students by changing how and what they read,” she said. “We want the students to know that we believe in education and believe in each of them. Reading Plus: A Candid Conversation with Leading Experts

Dr. P. David Pearson, Dr. Elfrieda "Freddy" Hiebert, Dr. John Guthrie, and Dr. Ralph Radach engage in a candid conversation about their involvement in the development of Reading Plus, a proven, online, silent reading program. Reading Plus helps all students become proficient readers by working with them to improve their comprehension skills, reading rate, essential vocabulary and their ability to handle complex text.

The Reading Plus Academic Advisory Team is comprised of leading experts in the fields of reading assessment, reading comprehension, vocabulary, motivation, and visual perception.

Reading Plus changes the way students read silently. Although everyone agrees that it’s a crucial skill, silent reading is often taught the least and tested the most, mainly because silent reading behaviors are unseen, unheard. and difficult to teach. Reading Plus actually changes the way students take in text, giving them the silent reading skills needed to focus their energies on gaining the knowledge and developing the deep interests that will make them life long readers and learners.

Reading Plus Webinar featuring Dr. Elfrieda "Freddy" Hiebert: Vocabulary Matters

Surprisingly, just 3% of all the words in the English language—about 4,500 words--make up more than 90% of all the words encountered in texts across all levels of written material.  An essential step in the process of becoming a proficient reader is mastery of this core vocabulary.  Students must become competent with these words in the primary grades if they are to remain on track to achieve college and career reading readiness by the end of high school.

In this recorded webinar, vocabulary acquisition expert Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert explains more about the critical need for core vocabulary mastery and addresses the importance of developing capacity with these words. Dr. Hiebert provides practical, effective strategies educators can use to support students' vocabulary development.

Dr. Hiebert is president and CEO of TextProject, Inc. [http://textproject.org/] and a pedagogical advisor for Reading Plus®. She is a fellow of the American Research Association and was awarded a William S. Gray Citation of Merit by the International Reading Association for outstanding contributions to the field of reading.

Internationally-renowned expert Dr. Ralph Radach is a pedagogical advisor for Reading Plus®. In this recorded webinar, Dr. Radach demonstrates how the analysis of eye movements can help to unveil the moment-to-moment dynamics of basic information processing operations during the process of reading.  In addition, Dr. Radach compares silent reading and oral reading from three angles: the visual acquisition of word information, the coordination of eye and voice while reading aloud, and the mental workload associated with both modes of reading. Finally, Dr. Radach offers a research-based perspective on this important question:  Is oral reading or silent reading most beneficial for comprehension?
